BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-- After earning the Conference USA automatic bid with a championship win on Saturday, the WKU softball team (34-12) was selected to the Athens Regional of the NCAA Division I Softball Championships, the NCAA announced on Sunday night on ESPNU.
The Lady Toppers head to a bracket that features host and No. 14 seed Georgia (40-14), North Carolina (36-14) and Central Connecticut State (31-12).
The regional round of play features a four-team double-elimination bracket, and WKU's opening round contest will come against North Carolina at 1:30 p.m. CT on Friday and will be aired on ESPN3. Georgia and Central Connecticut State will play in Friday's later game at 4 p.m. CT to be featured on SEC Network+/WatchESPN.
It's the second time in program history that WKU earned a spot in the NCAA Championships after notching an at-large bid in 2013 to the Tuscaloosa Regional. The Lady Toppers made it to the Regional Championship Game taking two games from USC Upstate before falling to host Alabama.
The 2015 squad made school history after becoming the first team to win the automatic bid, winning three games in three days at the C-USA Championship in its inaugural year with the league. C-USA will send two teams to the NCAA Champions, as Florida Atlantic joins the regular-season champion Lady Toppers.
A total of 64 teams were selected to the NCAA Championship with 32 conferences being awarded automatic qualification, while the remaining 32 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the bracket. The top 16 teams were seeded nationally.
Super Regionals for the championship will be held May 21-24 on eight campus sites. At each site, two teams play in a best-of-three tournament format. The winners from each site advance to the NCAA Women's College World Series.
