ARLINGTON, Texas - Tashia Brown scored 21 points for the second straight game and four WKU players scored in double figures as the Lady Toppers surged past UT Arlington 73-64 inside the College Park Center on Sunday afternoon.
Joining Brown in double figures were Kendall Noble (19), Ivy Brown (12) and Kayla Smith (11). WKU (5-2) had four players in double figures for the second straight game after also accomplishing the feat against Austin Peay.
The Lady Toppers used a late 15-0 run to take control after going down by four points early in the fourth quarter, and the Lady Mavericks were unable to cut the lead to any fewer than eight points down the stretch.
Amara Wainwright led all scorers with 24 points for UT Arlington (3-5), and LaShanda Green added 10 for the Lady Mavericks. Rebekah VanDijk led all players with 14 boards.
WKU finished 24-of-54 (44.4 percent) from the field, including 50 percent (13-of-26) in the first half. The Lady Toppers held UT Arlington to 23-of-57 shooting (40.4 percent) for the game. Despite being outrebounded 41-24, WKU was able to earn the victory.
WKU scored the first points of the afternoon on a three-pointer by Smith, but UT Arlington responded with a 12-3 run over the next five minutes to build an early six-point lead over the Lady Toppers. Wainwright led the Lady Mavs with five points during the stretch.
UT Arlington continued to lead until midway through the second quarter, when WKU rallied back with a 13-2 stretch to claim its first lead since the beginning of the game. Smith and Noble knocked down three-pointers during the run, punctuated by Noble's triple with 2:07 left to give the Lady Toppers a 33-25 advantage.
The Lady Toppers maintained an edge for much of the third quarter after taking a 33-30 lead into the halftime break. WKU twice stretched its lead to seven points, but UT Arlington pieced together a 15-6 run over the final five minutes of the quarter and took a 52-50 lead following Wainwright's three-pointer with 19 seconds remaining in the frame.
A Wainwright layup gave the Lady Mavericks a 54-50 lead less than a minute into the fourth quarter, but WKU responded with the game's decisive run, a 15-0 stretch over five minutes, to take a 65-54 lead with 3:51 left on the clock.
UT Arlington closed to within eight points two times, but WKU held off the Lady Mavericks down the stretch for the 73-64 win.
WKU will return to action for the 33rd Annual BB&T Classic inside E.A. Diddle Arena on Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Toppers will host Eastern Kentucky for the event and have won the last 11 meetings against the Colonels dating back to the 1981-82 season.
