MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The WKU women's soccer team fell to Middle Tennessee 2-0 on Friday in Murfreesboro, Tenn. at the Dean A. Hayes Stadium. Lady Toppers fall to 6-4-3 on the season and 2-2-1 in conference play while the Raiders improve to 8-3-1 and a perfect 4-0-0 in Conference USA, ranking them first in conference standings.
Middle Tennessee struck first with a 28th minute goal. The Blue Raiders applied pressure with heavy traffic in the box and Morgan Mauck was able to get it in the upper corner of the net past Allison Leone's reach.
The Raiders added to their lead with an insurance goal in the 87th minute when Jessica Steen made a cross to a streaking Tori Hawkins for the score.
WKU outshot the Raiders 13 to 12 and the two teams each had five shots on goal. Middle Tennessee's two goals were right on their average for the season (2.00 g/gm). Allison Leone finished the game with three saves and the Middle Tennessee keeper Kelsey Brouwer had five saves on the game.
Caitlin Hesse led WKU with three shots in the game and Lauren Moats, Haley Baldridge and Iris Dunn each had two. WKU had three corner kicks in the game while Middle Tennessee had four.
The Lady Toppers will now travel to Birmingham, Ala. to take on UAB on Sunday at 1:00 PM at the West Campus Field. UAB is 2-9-0 and 1-3-0 in conference play. The Blazers are coming off of a 2-1 overtime win on Friday against Marshall, snapping the Herd's 12-game unbeaten streak. UAB scored the game-winning goal four minutes into the overtime period.
WKU is 1-0-0 all-time against UAB after the Lady Toppers defeated the Blazers 1-0 last season in Bowling Green. The Blazers are led by senior Kacey Johnson with four goals on the season.
