AKRON, Ohio – Led by freshman Blake Smith, the Hilltopper Men's Golf team finished in seventh place with a five-over 869 (288-292-289) team score at the Firestone Invitational, hosted by Akron.
The Hilltoppers finished just five strokes back from third place finisher Old Dominion while the fresh-man Smith tallied a 25th place finish with a one-over 217 (74-70-73).
Following yesterday's opening two rounds, head coach Phillip Hatchett said, "I'm really proud of the way Blake Smith is playing today. He ground out two really good rounds, and when we all fire together, we will be tough to beat."
Senior Trey Aguirre tallied a 37th place showing with a three-over 219 (71-75-73) while sophomores Bryant Evans (70-74-77) and Billy Tom Sargent (73-77-71) each finished tied for 47th with five-over 221. Senior Austin King wrapped up the team card with a seven-over 223 (78-73-72).
Maryland took home the team and individual medalist honors with an eight-under 856 (284-285-287) while David Kocher won the event with a nine-under 217 (68-68-71).
The Hilltoppers are back in action on October 11 when they play host to the Kenny Perry Invitational at The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green.
