BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The WKU women's soccer team will host Marshall on Friday at 6:00 PM at the WKU Soccer Complex for a conference matchup that could have major implications in the Conference USA standings.
The two teams enter the match knotted at third in the conference standings with 14 points each. Both teams have one game remaining after Friday's match, limiting opportunities for points and separation. The top eight teams in the league earn a spot at the Conference USA Championship in Miami, Fla. in November.
The Lady Toppers come into the Friday night match on a mission after earning two impressive victories last weekend against FIU and Charlotte. WKU defeated FIU at home after sophomore Andrea Larsen scored her first career goal with a little over 90 seconds left to play in the game. The Lady Toppers took to the road for the last away game this season at Charlotte, where three different WKU players scored in a 3-1 win against the 49ers.
Since WKU faced off against Rice on Sept. 25, six different Lady Toppers have scored after Iris Dunn and Hannah Chua had scored all but three goals in the nonconference portion of the schedule. The variety in scoring has helped WKU put together a 4-2-2 in conference play. With 10 different Lady Toppers scoring this season thus far, WKU has the most scorers since 2012, which had 11 players finding the back of the net.
Marshall enters the contest after defeating FIU by a similar 1-0 score but dropping a match against Florida Atlantic in overtime. Marshall had the longest unbeaten streak in the country at one point this season with 12 straight games without a loss. That streak was snapped at UAB on Oct. 9.
The Thundering Herd are led in scoring by Sydney Arnold and Erin Simmons with six goals each. Goalkeeper Lizzie Kish is second in the conference with a 0.59 goals against average.
WKU is 2-0-0 against Marshall all-time, winning last season's contest in Huntington, 1-0. The win was WKU's first win in the program's inaugural season in Conference USA. The Lady Toppers are 4-2-1 at home this season.
Fans attending the game are encouraged to bring a canned good in efforts to "SAAC Hunger." The Student Athlete Advisory Council is organizing the food drive and those participating will receive free admission to the game.
