KENNESAW, Ga. - Freshman Blake Smith finished with a two-over 218 (74-71-73) for the tournament to finish eighth overall and WKU moved up one spot in the final round to place eighth on the team leaderboard at the Pinetree Intercollegiate hosted by Kennesaw State.
The Hilltoppers finished at 48-over 912 (313-298-301) for the event and have finished eighth or better in each of their four tournaments thus far during the fall. Memphis claimed the team crowd with an eight-under 856 (286-284-286), while the Tigers' Lars van Meijel earned medalist honors with a three-round total of 211 (-5, 73-65-73).
Smith finished just one stroke shy of his best collegiate performance at the Firestone Invitational two weeks ago, but finished two shots better than Dawson Armstrong of Lipscomb, the nation's No. 6 golfer in Golfstat's latest rankings. The freshman led the WKU card for the third time in four events this fall with his top finish.
For the second straight tournament, Trey Aguirre made a third-round leap up the leaderboard with his 75 on Tuesday. The senior moved up seven spots and finished tied for 41st with a 15-over 231 (81-75-75). Billy Tom Sargent joined Aguirre with the same score, going 82-72-77 in his three rounds.
Stuart Easton finished tied for 50th with a 20-over 236 (80-80-76); his third-round 76 was the third-best single-round score of his young collegiate career for the Hilltoppers. Bryant Evans finished with an 80 in the final round, but was disqualified due to an incorrect scorecard in the second round on Monday.
WKU will return to the course for the final time this fall as the travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., for the Middle Tennessee Intercollegiate next week.
