Game Notes - FIU and Charlotte
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The WKU (6-4-4, 2-2-2 C-USA) women's soccer team returns home after four straight matches on the road to host FIU (8-7-0, 4-2-0 C-USA) on Friday at 6:00 PM at the WKU Soccer Complex before wrapping up the away portion of the schedule on Sunday at Charlotte (5-9-0, 1-4-0 C-USA) at 12:00 PM (CT).
WKU currently sits at ninth in the Conference USA standings with two opportunities this weekend to move up the rankings against FIU and Charlotte. FIU is in a three-way tie for second in the conference with Middle Tennessee and Rice and Charlotte stands at 12th place.
WKU enters the match carrying a 2-2-2 conference record, including a loss and a tie last weekend. Middle Tennessee jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half against the Lady Toppers last Friday and scored an insurance goal late in the second half to put away WKU, 2-0. The Lady Toppers then traveled to Birmingham, where UAB also took an early lead but WKU got a score a minute into the second half and tied the game. Iris Dunn and Hannah Chua lead WKU with five goals each and five other Lady Toppers have added in a score this season.
The Lady Toppers are facing a familiar foe from the Sun Belt past on Friday against FIU. The two teams have not met since joining Conference USA and WKU carries a 6-5-3 overall record against the Panthers into the match. The last meeting was in 2012 when FIU came to Bowling Green and left with a 1-0 win in overtime behind a golden goal in the 95th minute.
FIU is coming off of a 1-0 win against Southern Miss and 2-0 win against LA Tech last weekend. Three of the Panthers lead the team with four goals this season. Alyssa Robinson, Madlen Weinhardt and Ellen Crist have each netted four goals and Scarlet Montoya has added in three scores for FIU.
Sunday's match will be only the second meeting between WKU and Charlotte. The first meeting came last season on Oct. 5, with Charlotte getting a 3-0 win over WKU in Bowling Green. Sophomore Martha Thomas leads the 49ers with 11 goals this season, the 11th most season goals in the country. Her 0.79 goals per game rate is good enough for 14th place in the NCAA and her 24 total points on the season stands at 20th in the nation.
Friday's match is Kick for Pink night, benefitting the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. The organization pairs with high school and college sports teams to raise awareness about pediatric cancer. Admission for the game is free and donations will be taken at the gate for the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation.
