WKU senior All-American candidate Alexis Govan sat down with her teammates and members of the Hilltopper Basketball team to discuss life off the court, life on the court and everything in between in a series of question-and-answer sessions.
Govan, who is interning with the WKU Athletic Communications/Media Relations department this semester, is returning to the court in 2014-15 after missing much of last season with a fractured tibia. As a sophomore, Govan was one of the most prolific scorers in the nation and will enter the 2014-15 season as the second leading active scorer in Conference USA behind teammate Chastity Gooch.
Today, Govan sits down with sophomore Ben Lawson:
What is life like in England?
BL: In London it can be really uptight, and people are always busy. It was quite nice to come to Bowling Green where people are relaxed. It was a good change.
How do you stay in touch with your family back in England?
BL: Mainly with Skype.
How often do you talk to your family?
BL: I Skype them on the weekend and days off. It takes about two hours, because they enjoy talking to me.
Besides your family, what do you miss most about England?
BL: The food. American food is good and more accessible, but our food is more organic and made close to the source. So I think the quality is probably a little bit better back in England.
What's your favorite thing about America?
BL: I'm always stuck on campus, so I would have to say the college life.
What was the biggest adjustment you had to make your freshman year?
BL: The physicality. In Europe everyone is my shape and size, so I'm used to playing long people that you can use your skill to get past them. Then I came up against George Fant, and it was something new to me.
What were practices with your England team like in comparison to practices here?
BL: The practices with my U-18 team were pretty similar mainly because of our coach. We were coached by a previous Lakers player who was very into conditioning. My U-20 was much more skilled based, and a lot of focus was put on our sets and being prepared in that aspect.
Name three players you have to have on your dream team.
BL: Myself, Magic Johnson and my high school coach Lee Ryan.
If you had to choose a teammate to be stranded on an island with who would it be and why?
BL: Kevin Kaspar, because he never stops with the jokes. Even when it's a struggle, he'll always keep it fun and chill.
What is your best non-athletic talent?
BL: Watching Netflix. I kill it. I can get four or five hours a day in watching Netflix. I'm not sure how I do it, but that has got to be a talent.
