WKU senior All-American candidate Alexis Govan sat down with her teammates, the 2014-15 WKU Lady Topper Basketball squad, and members of the men's basketball team to discuss life off the court, life on the court and everything in between in a series of question and answer sessions.
Govan, who is interning with the WKU Athletic Media Relations/Communications department this semester, is returning to the court in 2014-15 after missing much of last season with a fractured tibia. As a sophomore, Govan was one of the most prolific scorers in the nation and will enter the 2014-15 season as the second leading active scorer in Conference USA behind teammate Chastity Gooch.
Today, Govan sits down with redshirt freshman Aleeya Harris:
What is your favorite memory from last season?
AH: Winning the conference championship.
What was the NCAA tournament experience like for you?
AH: It was cool, and a nice chance to see the atmosphere at bigger schools.
What part of your game have you worked the hardest on during the summer to improve?
AH: Getting stronger and being more consistent.
What did you learn from watching the team all last season?
AH: I learned what not to do, and got to experience the transition without actually being on the court in games.
Do you think having that redshirt year will give you an advantage down the stretch?
AH: Yes, because I was able to learn a lot while watching the games. It gave me another perspective, as in a coaches view.
In high school you played volleyball, what was that experience like?
AH: It was fun, I really enjoyed it. Volleyball kept me busy.
Do you think playing volleyball helped you with basketball in anyway?
AH: Yeah, I think it helped with my timing when blocking shots.
If you could trade places with any celebrity for a day, who would it be? And why?
AH: Khloe Kardashian, because her life seems really fun and she's funny.
You had a job this summer, with whom was it with?
AH: I worked at Dominos Pizza, which was actually pretty fun. I not only learned how to make pizza, but I learned how to be a better people person.
What has it been like to have a high school rival turn into a collegiate teammate?
AH: I like it, because I don't have to worry about guarding her now.
Are Bowling Green and San Antonio similar at all?
AH: No, not at all. San Antonio is a big city, and Bowling Green is smaller and family oriented. People among the community actually know each other.
What do you remember about me (Alexis) from high school?
AH: I remember that you were the person we didn't want to play against. You made the level of play rise. Playing against you was fun, because you were always so hype all the time.
What has been your favorite part about being at WKU?
AH: Being a part of the team.
How exciting is it to have the opportunity to go back and play in your hometown this season?
AH: It's really exciting, I can't wait to see and play against people I grew up with.
If you could trade places with one teammate for a day, who would it be and why?
AH: It's between Chastity and Ruta. I say Chastity because she's weird and Ruta because then I could speak another language.
What is your favorite sports movie?
AH: The Heart of the Game, it's a documentary about a high school girls team.
How would you describe your game to fans that haven't seen you play?
AH: I'm really long, so I take up a lot of space in the paint. I'm athletic, and I jump a lot.
What's one word to describe Coach Clark-Heard?
AH: Personable.
What is one thing from Texas besides your family that you wish you had here?
AH: Whataburger.
If you could be on a reality TV show, which would it be and why?
AH: Keeping up with the Kardashians, because they're all really pretty and have money.
