NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Coming off its third shutout in four games WKU Soccer heads to New Haven, Conn. to take on Yale and Sacred Heart in the Yale Classic this weekend. The Lady Toppers will battle host Yale at 6:30 p.m. (CT) Friday at Reese Stadium before concluding tournament play against Sacred Heart Sunday at 11 a.m.
WKU's meeting with Yale will be its first in program history and its first against a team from the Ivy League. The Lady Toppers will also tangle with Sacred Heart for the first time in their first-ever match against a team from the Northeast Conference.
Head coach Jason Neidell graduated from Yale in 1994 with a degree and history and returns to New Haven for the first time since becoming the Lady Toppers' coach in 2001. As a player, Neidell led the Bulldogs to an NCAA Elite Eight appearance and an Ivy League title.
With a win over Yale (2-0), the Lady Toppers would begin the season 4-1 for the seventh time in its 14-year history. Should WKU emerge victorious in both matches this weekend, it would mark the best start since beginning 2008 13-1-3. Yale and Sacred Heart met Tuesday, with the Lady Bulldogs prevailing 2-1 on an 88th minute game-winner.
Yale is led by two-time All-Ivy League forwards Meredith Speck and Melissa Gavin while Sacred Heart returns 18 of 21 goals scored from last season.
The young Lady Toppers have experienced success early on, pitching three shutouts in their first four games while allowing only Tennessee to score. WKU's nine freshmen have combined to start 19 games and play 1,623 minutes, including midfielder Hannah Chua and forward Shayna Dheel who have started all four games.
Junior forward Lauren Moats leads the WKU offense with five points in 2014, scoring two goals versus Lipscomb and assisting on Chua's game-winning goal against Evansville last Sunday.
Friday's game will be streamed on the Ivy League Digital Network and updates can also be found on Twitter at @WKU_Soccer.
The 2014 WKU Soccer season is being presented by the United States Marines. This season The Marines and WKU Athletics are working together to promote the outstanding athletic and academic achievements of our female student athletes. The Marines are proud to work with and support these future leaders of America.
