NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Led by returning all-conference runners David Mokone and Katie Lever, the WKU cross country teams made their 2014 debuts in solid fashion at the Belmont Opener on Friday at Percy Warner Park.
Mokone, a three-time all-conference cross country performer and THE 2013 Sun Belt Conference champion, paced the Hilltoppers to a third-place team finish at the event with a 5,000-meter time of 15:14.89. His time was the fourth fastest in the field and just 12 seconds off the winning pace on the short course.
Sophomore Peter Agaba and junior Cory Kleinjan were strong in their first race of the season, finishing 13th and 19th overall, respectively. Junior Aaron Stevens and Sean Hurd rounded out the Hilltoppers scoring with 27th and 34th place finishes in the 91-runner field.
WKU finished third in the team race with 48 points, trailing only Belmont (20) and Purdue (11).
For the Lady Toppers it was Lever leading the way, coming in at 18:29.33 for a 26th place finish in her first 5K of 2014. Fellow junior Louise Hill-Stirling turned in a clocking of 18:41.97 to capture 29th place while Baylee Shofner came in at 36th overall. Freshman Savannah Ames scored for WKU in her first career meet, crossing as the Lady Toppers' fourth finisher in 19:43.37.
The Lady Toppers finished seventh out of 12 teams in the field with 75 points.
Both teams will have a week off before returning to the course in Nashville once more on Sept. 13 to run in the Commodore Classic. For more information on the WKU cross country teams, follow the program on Twitter at @WKUTrackField.
