BOWLING GREEN, Ky.--The Western Kentucky University softball team (32-22-1) will look to survive and advance on Wednesday, May 7, as the Lady Toppers begin their journey in the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Tournament at 5:30 p.m. CT.
WKU's opponent is still to be determined as the fourth-seeded Lady Toppers will face the winner of No. 5 Texas State and No. 8 UT Arlington. All of Wednesday's games are single elimination before the tournament becomes double elimination on Thursday.
Live stats and video for all the games can be found at the Championship Central page on SunBeltSports.org. In-game updates can also be found on Twitter via @WKU_GameDay.
WKU took the series from both of its possible opponents, including a sweep at UT Arlington that was highlighted by freshman Hannah Miniard's no-hitter in game two and the Lady Toppers' bats putting up four home runs over day one's action. Against the Bobcats, WKU swept the doubleheader courtesy of a sophomore Brooke Holloway home run in the top seventh to give the team a 1-0 win in game one. Texas State came back the next day and pounded out an 11-2 win in five innings.
WKU will make its 14th appearance and final appearance at the SBC Tournament this week, entering the field as the No. 4 seed. WKU has been the fourth seed twice in program history, the last coming in 2004 when the tourney was in Lafayette, going 0-2 with shutout losses to No. 5 North Texas and No. 3 Middle Tennessee. With the possibility of facing either the five or eight seed, WKU is 1-0 against a No. 8 seed and 3-3 against the No. 5 seed all time.
The Lady Toppers enter the tourney with a 21-26 record in SBC postseason action. WKU has appeared in the championship game three times in its history--2000, 2005 and 2013. Last year, WKU recorded a 3-2 mark in the tourney and fell just short to South Alabama, 2-0, but still earned an at-large bid to its first-ever NCAA Regional appearance.
