BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -
Western Kentucky University softball senior Kelsie Mattox was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced Thursday.
The Alpharetta, Ga., native holds a 3.80 GPA and will finish her academic career this year with a double major in political science and sociology as well as a minor in criminology. The first-time member will now be included on the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later.
Mattox has started in all 52 games this season in left field, as she ranks first on the team in walks (33), slugging percentage (.496) and on-base percentage (.484) while second on the team in doubles (11), hit by pitch (13) and RBI (36). Mattox is a two-time All-Sun Belt Conference selection while being named to the SBC Commissioner's List numerous times in her career.
The senior was one of four outfielders chosen to the District Two First-Team List, which consists of student-athletes from the states of Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and District of Columbia. Mattox is one of seven student-athletes on the Division I First Team from a school in Kentucky while she is one of four from a Sun Belt Conference school.
The Academic All-District Softball Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. To be eligible for Academic All-American consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.0 and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his or her institution.
