BOWLING GREEN, Ky.— The Western Kentucky University softball team (28-14-1) travels to Murfreesboro, Tenn., on Wednesday to face off with Middle Tennessee (7-36) for possibly the final time as non-conference opponents on Wednesday, April 16.
The game begins at 5 p.m. CT with live stats and video streaming available at goblueraiders.com. It is also the Blue Raiders' annual pink game in support of breast cancer awareness. In-game updates can also be found on Twitter with @WKU_GameDay.
WKU and MT will meet for the second time this season, as the Lady Toppers took a 10-4 win in Bowling Green on April 2. The visitors tied it at 3 runs each after 1.5 innings played before cutting their deficit to 5-4 in the fourth. However, a grand slam by Amanda Thomas lifted WKU to a 9-4 lead after four frames before the final run came in during the sixth inning.
In the game, Olivia Watkins went 4-for-4 with a trio of runs scored while Emily Rousseau earned the win after going five innings in relief to give up three hits with one unearned run to her name.
WKU leads the overall series 27-23 while the teams are knotted at nine wins each in games played at Murfreesboro. Including this season's win, WKU has won the past six games as well as eight of the last nine meetings. In the six-straight wins, WKU has allowed seven MT runs while scoring 41 runs of their own.
The upcoming game between the two teams marks the third time in the series that the teams will meet as non-conference opponents. April's earlier bout was the second while the teams met for a neutral tournament in Louisville during the 2005 season where WKU won 6-3.
WKU is coming off of a 2-1 weekend at ULM, after defeating the Warhawks 7-1 and 9-3 to sweep Saturday's action while a three-run walk-off home run gave ULM Sunday's final win and avoid the series sweep.
Junior Preslie Cruce led the team with a .600 average after seven walks allowed her to have three hits on five official at-bats. Watkins posted a team-high four hits while going 6-for-6 in stolen bases. Sophomore Brooke Holloway made her way to home plate four times during the three-game series, the most of any Lady Topper.
