Nov. 9, 2014 HUNTINGTON, W. Va.— The WKU volleyball team (25-5, 13-1) posted a 3-0 win (25-23, 26-24, 25-17) in its regular-season road finale at Marshall (14-15, 8-6) on Sunday afternoon.
WKU's offense hit .234 in the match with 48 kills, as freshman Jessica Lucas posted her second double-double of the weekend, guiding the team with 39 assists and 12 digs. Fellow freshman Alyssa Cavanaugh had a match-high 15 kills followed by senior Heather Boyan with 12, as she hit .500 for the contest.
Sophomore Georgia O'Connell broke her career high in digs she set on Friday against Southern Miss with 25 digs against the Thundering Herd. At the net, WKU had 11 blocks with Boyan notching six followed by Cavanaugh with three and four other Lady Toppers with two each.
For Marshall, Lauren Legge led the team with 11 kills while Legge along with Jillian Shemanski had three blocks each. Sammie Bane had 32 assists and 12 digs, joining Elyse Panick and Allie Kellerman with double-digit digs, as Panick had 12 and Kellerman had 11.
Boyan's six kills and O'Connell's seven digs led WKU to a 25-23 first set win. WKU got out to an early 5-1 lead before Marshall knotted it at 7 each. After four tied scores, WKU fell behind by one before a 5-0 run gave WKU a 16-13 lead at a Marshall break. The home team came back to tie it late at 22 each, but two kills by Boyan and a kill by Cavanaugh sealed the win.
An 8-0 run in the second frame helped WKU get out to a 9-5 lead. During that run, Cavanaugh posted four kills while junior Noelle Langenkamp had a hand in two block assists. The Lady Toppers looked to be on its way to a decisive win at 24-15, but Marshall put together a 9-0 rally to tie the frame at 24 each. A kill from Bodway along with a block by the tandem of Bodway and Boyan gave WKU the 2-0 lead with a 26-24 win.
WKU's best set came in the third, hitting at a .293 clip while holding Marshall to a .075 mark. The Lady Toppers broke a 9-9 stalemate with four-straight points to distance themselves at 13-9. WKU continued to cruise the rest of the frame, as behind nine digs from O'Connell, WKU won the set 25-17.
Two home games remain in the WKU regular-season schedule, as UTEP comes to E.A. Diddle Arena on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. CT while Middle Tennessee closes WKU's regular season with a match on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. CT when WKU will celebrate Senior Night.
