Nov. 13, 2014 BOWLING GREEN, Ky.— The WKU volleyball team (26-5, 14-1) took control from start to finish on Thursday night, sweeping UTEP (6-20, 4-11) by scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-10 in E.A. Diddle Arena, as the Lady Toppers have now won their last seven matches.
Freshman Alyssa Cavanaugh and junior Haley Bodway again paced the offense, as Cavanaugh had a match-high 11 kills while Bodway tallied 10. Freshman Jessica Lucas added her input in all areas of the game, as she had 31 assists with seven kills, seven digs, three block and two service aces. Junior Rachel Engle also had a pair of aces, as WKU totaled six in the contest.
Sophomore Georgia O'Connell collected 14 digs in the back row while junior Noelle Langenkamp led the team with four blocks at the net. Along with Lucas, senior Heather Boyan also notched three blocks while Cavanaugh had two.
For UTEP, Coline Coessens and Talia Jones each had seven kills to lead the Miners. Naomi Whitehair held down the back row defense with 12 digs while Coessens followed with nine. At the net defensively, Jacqueline Cason posted three blocks on the night.
In the first set, it took some time for the Lady Toppers to find their groove, but WKU eventually rolled to a 25-14 win. WKU separated itself from UTEP at 16-8 after posting a 7-2 run that included Boyan tag-teaming in a pair of blocks and notching two kills. The team would go on to end the frame on a 4-1 scoring run.
With the team collecting 17 digs in the frame, WKU took a 2-0 lead at the break with a 25-18 win. O'Connell had eight digs in the set, as under her serve, the Lady Toppers got out to a 15-11 advantage. The Miners had a 3-0 run late to close in at 20-16, but a R. Engle kill sealed the win.
WKU wasted no time in the third set, running out to a 14-4 lead. The offense clicked in the frame to post a match-best .367 hitting percentage, as UTEP posted just five digs and a block in the contest. The Lady Topper defense held the UTEP offense to a -.080 mark with five kills, as WKU won the set 25-10.
WKU ends its regular season with a match on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. CT when the Lady Toppers take on Middle Tennessee in Bowling Green. WKU will celebrate Senior Night prior to the match, honoring the careers of Boyan and Mollie Pajakowski. Fans are also asked to wear red, as WKU will "Red Out" Diddle Arena.
