KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - After windy conditions forced higher than average scores on the first two rounds, a pleasant day provided better conditions for the third and final round of the Wendy's Kiawah Classic for the WKU men's golf team, who closed out their fall campaign on Tuesday.
WKU finished in a tie 17th place, posting consistently better rounds than the previous day, tallying a 55-over 919 (318-301-300). The Hilltoppers tied with High Point.
"This is always one of the most competitive fall collegiate events in the country, and to improve each day says a lot about the resiliency of our team," said head coach Phillip Hatchett. "We had a poor day on Sunday, but we shot better as a group for the final two rounds and that gives us confidence going into the winter before opening back up in February."
Seniors Cameron Beal (77-77-75) and Brandon Beckham (80-74-75) tied for 62nd place as they both shot a three-over 75 on the day to finish with a 13-over 229. Junior Trey Aguirre tied for 70th with a 15-over 231 (81-75-75) while senior Andy Gladden tied for 73rd with one more stroke, a 16-over 232 (82-75-75). Senior Nate Johnson closed out the card with a 27-over 243 (80-82-81), while tying for 100th.
The nation's No. 37 team, Winthrop, won the team title with an 864 (288-295-281) team score while Georgia Southern's Scott Wolfes and USC Upstate's Ryan Cornfield tied for the individual medal with a six-under 210.
WKU will open their spring championship season with the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, hosted by South Alabama, on Feb. 23-24.
