LOUISVILLE, Ky.— The WKU softball team placed seven student-athletes from its 2014 squad on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar-Athletes list, the organization announced Thursday.
Current players Preslie Cruce and Kathryn Downing earned the honor while former players Kelsie Mattox, India Steward, Andie Martin, Hannah Miniard and Emily Rousseau also made the list. The award is bestowed upon any player submitted by a member coach who achieved a 3.50 grade point average or higher during the 2013-14 academic year. In all, the NFCA recognized 1,096 honorees from Division I schools.
As a team, the Lady Toppers also earned All-Academic Team honors with a 3.13 GPA last year. The NFCA placed 104 teams on its list, ranging from GPAs of 3.67-2.856 in the Division I category while WKU is one of five Conference USA schools honored, as Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, Marshall and UAB were also listed.

WKU continues its fall schedule this month when it takes on Columbia State in a doubleheader on Oct. 11 beginning at noon CT at the WKU Softball Complex. The team then travels to Knoxville to take on Tennessee at 12:30 p.m. CT and Tennessee Tech at 3 p.m. CT on Oct. 18. The schedule concludes on Oct. 25 in a doubleheader against Roane State in Bowling Green.
The 2015 WKU softball season is being presented by the United States Marines. This season, the Marines and WKU Athletics are working together to promote the outstanding athletic and academic achievements of our female student-athletes.
