BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Junior All-America candidate Chastity Goochhas been named the CollegeSportsMadness.com Mid-Major National Player of the Week and Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday by CollegeSportsMadness.com.
Gooch averaged 26.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game in two road wins last week to stay near the top of the SBC standings and improve the Lady Toppers' road mark to 3-1 in league play. Gooch scored a career-best 31 points to help WKU overcome a 13-point deficit in the second half to win 77-73 at ULM last Wednesday. Gooch also grabbed seven rebounds in 39 minutes of play. In one of her top individual performances of her career, Gooch picked up her second foul with 12:45 remaining in the first half but then played 16:09 of game time before picking up her third foul with 15:41 left in the second half.
Gooch followed up her performance at ULM with a 22 point, 11 rebound and four block performance against Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday in a 68-63 win. She hit 10-of-12 shots from the field in the contest.
Gooch reached two major milestones during the game at ULM. Gooch became the 35th member of WKU's 1,000 point club late in the first half and also posted her 700th career rebound. Gooch became the 35th member of the school's 1,000 point club. She scored the basket that put her at 1,000 points for her career with 2:33 left in the first half to cut the deficit to three at 32-29 against ULM. Gooch reached the 1,000 point mark in her 80th career game in a WKU uniform. She becomes one of 11 players in program history to reach the 1,000 point mark in 80 games or less in a WKU uniform.
Gooch is the second WKU player to join the 1,000 point club this season as junior Alexis Govan reached the feat on Dec. 7, 2013. The last time that two players joined the club in the same season was in 2008-09 when Dominique Duck and Kenzie Richboth reached the mark in the same season.
After posting six blocks on the weekend, Gooch is also just two blocks away from reaching 100 blocks in her career. When she reaches the mark, she will become just the sixth player in program history with 100 steals, 100 assists and 100 blocks in the course of their career.
WKU (13-5, 5-2) returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014 when the Lady Toppers taken on UT Arlington at 7:00 p.m. CT in E.A. Diddle Arena.
The game has been earmarked as Faculty and Staff Night as well as Faith and Family Night. Faculty/Staff receive one complimentary reserved seat ticket for the game by showing a valid WKU ID at the WKU box office in Diddle Arena prior to game day. All church members can also receive reduced price reserved tickets for just $5 each by showing a church bulletin at the ticket office.
