CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Junior All-America candidate Alexis Govan scored 21 points to lead WKU to a 90-75 win over SEMO at the Show Me Center on Tuesday evening. WKU has scored at least 80 points in consecutive games for the first time since 2009-10 season and reached 90 points for the second time in the Michelle Clark-Heard era.
After falling behind 2-0 to open the game, the Lady Toppers went on a 9-0 run over a two minutes stretch to jump ahead 9-2. The Lady Toppers maintained a lead of around 10 for much of the first half until a 10-0 run within the final four minutes of the first half propelled WKU to a lead of 18 at 41-23 after a basket by Govan with 1:42 remaining in the opening half. The basket to cap the 10-0 run gave Govan her 17th point of the first half of play.
Govan eventually reached double figures for the 40th consecutive game, one of the nation's top streaks and just the fourth streak of 40 games or more by a WKU player since the start of the 2000-01 season.
The Lady Toppers scored the first four points of the second half to go up 20 at 47-27 before SEMO was able to gradually cut into the lead and eventually cut the WKU lead to seven at 56-49 following a three-point field goal by SEMO's Olivia Hackmann. Sophomore guard Micah Jones quickly answered with a three-point field goal to go back up by 10 and the Lady Toppers maintained a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game.
COMING UP NEXT: WKU travels to Northern Kentucky on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. CT.
The Lady Toppers then return home on Wednesday, Nov. 27 to face fifth-ranked Louisville in E.A. Diddle Arena. The Cardinals are coached by former WKU assistant Jeff Walz. The game has been labeled as a "White Out," with the first 1,000 fans receiving a free shirt commemorating the event. The matchup with the Cards will likely be WKU's first game against a top-five opponent since third-ranked North Carolina on Dec. 20, 2007 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
It also will mark the first time since March 11, 2000 that WKU has welcomed a team that reached the Final Four in the previous season to E.A. Diddle Arena. All-time, WKU has hosted 12 teams that played in the Final Four the previous season and played 32 games against teams that had reached the Final Four the previous season.
Centerplate will also offer a Hilltopper Express Deal at the game, allowing fans to purchase one hot dog, one bag of chips and one bottle of Coca-Cola for just $7. In addition, coats for area children will be collected at the game in conjunction with the Bowling Green Jr. Women's Club Coats for Kids Drive. Coats will be donated to children in Bowling Green as part of the WKU Hilltoppers With Heart program.
