BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Both WKU golf teams closed out tournaments on Tuesday, surging back with improvement in their team scores for both squads.
Ellinor Haag continued her stellar fall, taking second place overall at UC Riverside-hosted Birdies for Breast Cancer charity event, held at the par-72, 5,860 yard Oak Quarry Golf Club in Riverside, Calif. As a team, the Tops finished the day in fourth place with a 911 overall score (298-303-310).
On the west coast, the men's side finished up play at Firestone Invitational, held at the par-72, 7,125 yard Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. Trey Aguirre, who led the Topper men across the board, finished in a tie for 13th while the team finished in a tie at No. 16 overall.
Women's Golf:
Haag, who finished one stroke back from individual winner Brittani Ferraro of UCR, got her second top-two finish of the fall and third podium finish in four events when she turned in a 210 (71-68-71) overall score. Her 71 in the third round tied for the lowest round of the day and helped the Tops finish in the top four.
Another pair of Hilltopper women finished in the top 20 as Michaela Bordeianu's 228 and April Butler's 230 put them in ties for 14th and 17th overall.
Daniela Galassi carded a 246 (77-85-84) on the event and finished in a tie at No. 46 overall while McKenzie Smith turned in a 249 (83-82-84) to finish at No. 50 on her own. Mallory Vaughn split the difference and turned in a 247 (81-84-82) to come in a No. 48 for the event.
The host school, UCR, took the overall team honors as well, charting an 880 team score to finish 15 strokes ahead of California Baptist and CSU-Northridge which turned in identical 895 scores to tie for second.
Men's Golf:
Closer to home, the WKU men's squad hit under 77 as a team on the day to finish in a tie for 16th overall. Aguirre's 73 on the day closed out his 218 (75-70-73) event score to lead the Tops.
Cameron Beal, who's 68 yesterday was a team low for the event, closed out the event with a 72 in round three and finished with a 226, good enough for No. 52 on the individual board. Taylor Thompson finished alone at No. 74 with his 232 (80-76-76) on the day.
Nick Thompson (236, 80-79-77) finished in a tie at No. 79 while Brandon Beckham rounded out the team scoring in a tie for 86th with a 238 (85-77-76) on the day.
Both squads return to action on Oct. 14 when the men take part in the Austin Peay Invitational and the women head to Arkansas State for the Lady Red Wolves Classic.
