VIDEO: Jason Neidell Discusses Winning the SBC Regular-Season Title Outright
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The WKU soccer team battled Evansville for 110 minutes at Arad McCutchan Stadium on Sunday afternoon, but that wasn't enough to decide the Lady Toppers' regular-season finale as the match ended in a 0-0 tie.
WKU finishes the regular season at 8-5-5 and due to results around the Sun Belt Conference, the Lady Topper claimed the Sun Belt Conference regular-season championship outright.
Evansville's attack gave WKU a stiff test, firing 19 shots, including seven on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Nikki Hall earned her first start of the season and was stout between the posts for WKU, tallying seven saves and consistently cleaning up Aces' attacks.
Senior Sydney Sisler led WKU's offensive attack against Evansville, putting two of her team-high three shots on goal. Sisler nearly headed in a cross from fellow senior Andrea Curry early in the first half and had another shot from 30 yards out tip saved by UE goalkeeper Simone Busby.
Sisler's third shot barely missed her mark in the 73rd minute as she poked the ball just left of the left goal post.
The first overtime period was filled with scoring opportunities for Evansville but a save from Hall in the 93rd minute and a cleaned up cross in the goalkeeper's box with under 30 seconds remaining in the frame kept the match scoreless.
WKU took control in the second overtime period and had its best chance squandered by UE's Busby as she saved a point blank shot from freshman Kelly Phipps.
The Lady Toppers will have the week off as they prepare for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, which will be held Nov. 6-10 in San Marcos Texas. As the regular-season champions WKU will be the tournament's No.1 seed and will face No.8 seed UALR on Nov. 6 at 4 p.m. (CT). For more information on WKU Soccer, visit WKUSports.com.
