BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Off a round-for-the-ages from Trey Aguirre, the WKU Men's golf team won the Dayton Flyer Invitational, held at the par-70, 6,828 yard NCR Country Club, by 13 strokes
"We gave ourselves a chance with a strong opening round yesterday," said head coach Phillip Hatchett. "We're looking forward to the future, because once we get off to a good start, we've played strong. I'm just really proud of everyone and hopefully this is one of just many more victories to come."
It was the first tournament win for the team under Hatchett and first for the program since the 2007-08 competition season. The team entered the day four strokes back from then-leader Cleveland State and finished 13 ahead with Cleveland State coming in second at 579.
Aguirre turned in a four-under 66 on the day, his lowest round of the fall season, to help pace the Tops to the tournament title. On the event, Aguirre and teammate Cameron Beal shot equal 139's to finish in a tie for second place on the individual leader boards.
Strong days for two other Hilltoppers, Brandon Beckham and Keith Tooley, Jr., gave WKU four of their five golfers in the top-10. Beckham finished the event with a 144 (74-70) to match Tooley (72-72) for a tie at ninth place.
Taylor Thompson rounded out the scoring for the Tops, scratching a four-stroke improvement on the day to end at No. 34 overall with a 148 (76-72), as four strokes proved to be the difference between top 10 and the rest of the pack.
Aguirre led all golfers on par four holes, turning in a 3.92 average while Beckham went 3.96 on par fours. Four WKU golfers finished at the top of the pack in birdies tallied with Beal turning in nine for the event. Beckham also finished with 26 pars to lead all individuals.
WKU also put a team in the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, hosted by Austin Peay in Hopkinsville. The squad finished in 11th place, headlined by Andy Gladden's 217 (73-70-74) to finish in a tie for 17th overall.
