VIDEO: #WKU Soccer Weekend Preview - Troy/South Alabama
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Coming off a dramatic road victory at Texas State, the WKU soccer team (5-3-4, 3-0) returns to the confines of home on Friday as the Lady Toppers host Troy (6-7, 2-1) at 1 p.m. (CT) in a pivotal Sun Belt Conference matchup at the WKU Soccer Complex.
WKU has opened Sun Belt play with three-consecutive shutout victories and is aiming for its first 4-0 start in league action since the 2007 season in which the Lady Toppers won the regular-season conference crown. The Lady Toppers hold a 5-2-1 advantage over Troy all-time and tied the Trojans 1-1 at the WKU Soccer Complex last season.
Senior goalkeeper Nora Abolins leads the league in shutouts (5), goals against average (0.64) and save percentage (.860) and hasn't surrendered a goal in over 395 minutes dating back to Sept. 20. Freshman forward Iris Dunn has led the Lady Toppers offense this season, netting three goals and dishing out one assist for a team-high seven points.
WKU will be assisting Troy with its #Project19 initiative for Trojan soccer player Kailani Decock, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma this past summer. #Project19 is centered on providing support and awareness for those who are battling lymphoma cancer. A donation bucket will be set up at the front entrance of the WKU Soccer Complex for those interested in supporting Decock and #Project19.
Friday's match will also have an 80's theme as fans and Greek organizations are encouraged to attend the match in 80's attire. A trophy will be given to the Greek organization with the highest attendance and a prize will be awarded to the fan with the best 80's costume.
After battling Troy, WKU hits the road for Mobile, Ala. where it faces South Alabama in a Sun Belt match pitting the first-place Lady Toppers (3-0) versus the second-place Lady Jaguars (2-0-1). WKU has won seven of its last eight meetings with South Alabama, including four straight in Mobile. First touch is set for 1 p.m. (CT) on Sunday.
