BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-The Western Kentucky University softball team has been using a part of its offseason to give back to the Bowling Green community.
On Tuesday, the Lady Toppers participated in National Voter Registration Day by setting up in various spots around campus and encourage classmates to register to vote for the upcoming election.
"Today we handed out voter registration cards to students," junior Emily Rousseau said. "It felt good to get out into the student population and help them register because it is important for younger people to get involved in voting."
"It was great helping everyone register to vote," sophomore Preslie Cruce said. "I'm glad I could make a difference."
The WKU softball team also hosted a free clinic September 20 at Buchanan Park in Bowling Green.
For girls ages 6-13, the hour-long clinic had the Lady Toppers working with the girls on hitting and pitching to help teach and improve the game of those who attended. Each girl received a lot of attention from the team, as it took place on two fields with a maximum of 30 girls on each.
The Lady Topper freshmen also got to do a special activity, as the trio of Kelsi Pardue, Brooke Holloway and Bethany Oglesby visited Plano Elementary on September 19.
Led by former WKU track and field athlete Monteka Flowers, the student-athletes read and talked to the children about being proactive in the classroom and what it takes to be a leader.
"It was neat to see the kids already talking about being proactive at such a young age," said Holloway. "Plano Elementary is really setting the kids up to become successful, and you can tell that the kids enjoy class time and have a lot of fun."
The WKU softball team's fall schedule starts Wednesday, September 26 at 6 p.m. when the team hosts Lindsey Wilson. It continues the weekend of October 6 with the Topper Fall Classic I and concludes the weekend of October 20 with the Topper Fall Classic II.
