Mobile, Ala. — The Lady Topper softball team (15-11) closed-out the opening SBC series being swept by South Alabama in the final game Sunday afternoon, 11-3.
On the day the Lady Toppers tallied three runs off seven hits, for three RBI, leaving four runners on base and one error. Sophomore Ciara Garcia went two-for-two at the plate with one run and three RBI as she tallied her second home run of the season and fourth career home run. Sophomore Mallorie Sulaski pitched 2.2 innings giving up seven runs off seven hits, her record falls to 6-4 on the season.
South Alabama opened the game in the bottom of the first inning with four runs off four hits. The Jaguars opened with two singles and two stolen bases followed by a fielder's choice that brought one run in. Julie Moss hit a double to left field bringing one run in followed by a double down the right field line bringing two more runs in.
The Lady Toppers fought back in the top of the third inning with three runs off four hits, leaving one runner on base. Freshman Kelsie Mattox hit a single through the right side followed by a single to left field by junior Laura Smith. Garcia drilled a home run to left center field bringing three runs in. The home run is the second of the season for Garcia, trailing by just one run.
The Jaguars extended the lead in the bottom of the third inning with three runs off three hits with one Lady Topper error. With a runner on first the Jaguars singled on a bunt followed by a sacrifice bunt placing runners on second and third. A sacrifice fly brought one run in followed by a double to left center bringing two more runs in. South Alabama added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning off two hits. The Jaguars tallied a single up the middle and a double down the right field line. South Alabama added two more runs off no hits in the bottom of the sixth to close-out the game in six innings.
WKU left one runner on base in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings all off one hit in each inning. Junior Dana Nathanson pitched 2 innings allowing two runs off four hits. Freshman Brittanie Albright pitched 0.1 inning allowing two runs with no hits, sophomore Kim Wagner finished 0.1 inning facing two batters.
The Lady Toppers 15-11 return home to host Belmont in a doubleheader Tuesday at the WKU Softball Complex, with first pitch slated for 5 p.m.
