BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University baseball team will wrap up its fall practice schedule with a one game, winner-take-all intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday at Nick Denes Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. and admission is free.
Student intern Jake Wells will manage the Red team while volunteer assistant coach Jeff Mercer will be at the helm of the Black team. First-year head coach Matt Myers expects the team to play seven to nine innings and for most of both rosters to see action.
Junior Tanner Perkins will take the hill to start for the Black team against transfer Tim Bado for the Red team.
Myers hopes to see his team close out their fall practice in a way that prepare them for the upcoming season.
"I just want to see our kids continue to play the way they have the last four weeks," Myers said. "I really don't want them to change anything that we've been doing because this is no different of a game than what we've the done the last four weeks. How we play the game is not going to change Saturday based on our previous scrimmages. We are going to play with energy, we are going to play fast, we're going to be professional in what we do and we're going to have fun doing it.
"We're going to compete for every inch, ounce, out that we can get. Whether that is on the mound, in the box, in the field or on the bases, that's what I want our kids to exemplify and not just for one inning. That is the thing about wanting to play with energy and wanting to play fast and play focused, is the ability to do it for the full 27 outs."
The Hilltoppers open the 2012 season February 17-19 when they host Toldeo at Nick Denes Field.
