BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The Western Kentucky University softball team was named an All-Academic Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association this week, the organization announced. Additionally, eight Lady Toppers were named 2011 All-America Scholar Athletes.
The Lady Toppers received the academic recognition after posting a cumulative 3.26 team grade-point average for the 2010-2011 academic year. WKU's team GPA ranks 57th nationally. The eight Lady Toppers selected as All-America Scholar Athletes are second-most in the Sun Belt Conference behind Troy's ten selections. Current senior Amanda Walden as well as juniors Kellie Quarles, Shelby Taylor, Mallorie Sulaski, and Ciara Garcia, and sophomore Kelsie Mattox earned the academic honors from the NFCA. Sara Williams and Dana Nathanson were also named All-America Scholar Athletes. The award is given to any player submitted by a member coach who achieved a 3.50 grade point average or higher during the 2010-11 academic year.
On October 15, WKU will host the Topper Fall Classic II at the WKU Softball Complex. The Lady Toppers will play Campbellsville that day at 1 and 5 p.m., as well as Volunteer State at 3 p.m. The Topper Fall Classic II will be the Lady Toppers' Breast Cancer Awareness game with the team taking up donations for the Susan G. Koman for the Cure Foundation.
