The match marked the first time the two teams have met in competition with the Cardinals now owning a 1-0 advantage over the Lady Toppers.
The Lady Toppers allowed the Cardinals to post shots first as the Cardinals took control of the first period. The Cardinals outshot the Lady Toppers in the first period 10-5. In the 33rd minute of the match Ball State had control as Sarah Orisich dribbled the ball down the middle past a Lady Topper defender and punched it in past Lady Topper goalkeeper Katlyn Barnes.
Lady Topper Chrissy Tchoula had a shot on goal in the 44th minute to try and tie it up before the half but was saved by the Cardinals goalkeeper. The first period saw zero corner kicks by either team.
The rain continued heavily throughout the entire match as the Lady Toppers came out in the second period with more control. WKU flip-flopped the shots from the first period, outshooting the Cardinals in the second period 10-5. Lady Topper Laura Ray posted a shot on goal three minutes into the second period before WKU would have the first two corner kick opportunities of the match followed by two shots that came up shy of the net.
The Lady Toppers tallied three shots on goal in the second period to the Cardinals one shot on goal. Lady Topper Tchoula posted two shots on goal in the match while Mallory Outerbridge and Laura Ray both posted two shots with one on goal. WKU and Ball State both had three corner kick opportunities in the second period.
WKU goalkeeper freshman Katlyn Barnes played the entire 90-minute match with three saves, allowing her first goal of the season, Barnes is now 1-1 on the season.
