BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - WKU softball senior Shannon Smith, who was recently named to the Academic All-District IV First Team, has been named First Team Academic All-America by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and ESPN The Magazine. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must be a starter or an important reserve with at least a 3.30 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Smith, an accounting major from Portage, Mich., is one of two captains on the 2010 Lady Topper team. Academically, she was named the Gordon Ford College of Business Outstanding Accounting Senior and is the 2010 WKU Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Additionally, she is a three time WKU Scholar-Athlete award winner, has been named to the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's List twice and has been named to the WKU President's List seven times. She was also named the 2008 WKU Foreign Language Achievement award winner.
Athletically Smith is a leader on and off the field. After suffering an injury early in the season, Smith has played in 29 games this year and has recorded over 20 hits, 15 RBI and scored four runs. With a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, she has posted an overall batting average of .333 and a slugging percentage of .375. In the field, she has posted 109 putouts and six assists.
