BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - After falling to the Ragin' Cajuns (19-11, 3-0 SBC) in two games on Saturday, the Lady Toppers (18-12, 2-7 SBC) could not overcome ULL's hot bats falling on Sunday 6-2. ULL racked up four of their runs off two home runs and added two runs in the seventh inning to complete the sweep of the Lady Toppers.
In the first inning, the Ragin' Cajuns continued their hard hitting in the series hitting their third home run and first of the day, this time by Melissa Verde. WKU responded in the bottom of the inning tying the game up at one off one hit and one ULL error. Freshman Ciara Garcia started the inning off with a single to left center field to reach first. When senior Kelsey McCauley reached first off a fielder's choice, Garcia advanced to second off an error by ULL and third on the throw. She then scored one batter later when senior Lindsay Antone also reached base off a fielder's choice.
ULL added a run in the second inning to take their second lead of the day. After the Ragin' Cajuns started the inning with a double, Lana Bowers advanced to third off a ground out and scored off a single by Britni Soria. ULL continued to extend its lead in the third inning scoring another two runs of four hits. For the second time in the game, Verde blasted a home run to score two, this time to right center field.
Freshman Mallorie Sulaski cut ULL's lead to two in the bottom of the sixth hitting her third home run of the season. With two outs in the inning, she hit her first home run of the series over the fence in right field.
ULL added their final two runs of the game in the top of the seventh inning to pull ahead 6-2 heading into the final half inning of play. ULL scored their first fun of the inning off a sacrifice fly to right field by Lana Bowers and their second off a single by Nerissa Myers.
In the game, the Lady Toppers recorded four hits. Sophomore Dana Nathanson recorded the loss for the Lady Toppers falling to 4-4 after giving up five hits and four runs. ULL's Donna Bourgeois picked up the win and improved to 9-7 this season after giving up just four hits and striking out six.
WKU will take on Lipscomb on Tuesday, March 30 at 5 p.m. at the WKU Softball Complex.
