"I thought our tournament went well, everything ran well and we had a great crowd. The day started out cold but ended up being a nice day. It's always good to have an opportunity to play," said head coach Tyra Perry. "We have so many young players on the field and even our older players haven't had a lot of experience on the field. With our youth, this being our first time out, I think we made mistakes and beat ourselves but not necessarily what the other teams did to us."
The Lady Toppers opened the day with a 2-1 victory over Lindsey Wilson. The game went all the way to the seventh inning before Lindsey Wilson brought the first runner in off a home run by Amy Harner. WKU struck back in the bottom of the seventh inning as junior Amanda Walden hit a double to left field. Freshman Tiffany Gooch went in to pinch run for Walden. Freshman Kelsie Mattox hit a double to bring Gooch in to tie the game 1-1. Finishing the game in the bottom of the ninth inning Walden drilled a home run to add one run and take the 2-1 victory over Lindsey Wilson.
The Lady Toppers tallied four hits and two runs, with four runners left on base. Lindsey Wilson posted seven hits and one run.
WKU battled Campbellsville in their second game of the day, defeating them 6-0 with a no hitter. The Lady Toppers brought one run in at the top of the fifth inning, the runner senior Elizabeth Ferrell. The top of the seventh inning the Lady Toppers tallied five runs off four hits to take a 6-0 lead. Sophomore Katrina Metoyer hit a single to left field, advanced to third as Sulaski drilled a double to center field and brought home as freshman Megan Johnson hit a single to left field. Sulaski, Walden, Johnson and Mattox all came in for the Lady Toppers.
Sulaski pitched the first five innings with freshman Brittanie Albright coming in the sixth inning to finish the game, for a no-hitter.
In game three for the Lady Toppers they battled Louisville, dropping the contest 1-2. Louisville opened the game with their three runs in the bottom of the first inning. A triple by Maggie Ruckenbrod brought two runs in, followed by a single to left field from Colby Wherry brought Ruckenbrod in for their third run.
WKU stopped Louisville from tallying anymore runs in the final six innings. The Lady Toppers grabbed their one run in the top of the seventh inning as Sulaski was brought in on a fielders choice, after a single to left field by Walden. The Lady Toppers posted two hits in their final game.
Up Next: The 2010 WKU Lady Topper softball team will travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to participate in the University of Tennessee fall tournament Friday and Saturday. The Lady Toppers take on Milligan at 2:00 p.m. and Tennessee at 6:00 p.m. Friday. On Saturday the Lady Toppers will battle Lee at 10:00 a.m.
