Murfreesboro, Tenn. - The WKU Lady Toppers ended their regular season Friday evening with a 0-2 loss to Middle Tennessee. The Lady Toppers finish the regular season with a record of 8-8-2 overall and 6-5 in the Sun Belt Conference. WKU will take on North Texas Wednesday evening in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference soccer tournament.
The Lady Toppers were outshot by Middle Tennessee 13-11 but tied 6-6 with shots on goal. Middle Tennessee scored their two goals in the first period. WKU held the Blue Raiders to a scoreless second half posting five shots. Leading the Lady Toppers in shots was sophomore forward Laura Ray with three shots and two on goal. Junior forward Lindsey Goad tallied three shots. Junior goalkeeper Libby Stout made four saves in the match.
The first period opened as WKU sophomore forward Sydney Sisler tallied the first shot of the match on goal, two minutes in the match. Ray followed up with a shot on goal in the ninth minute. Middle Tennessee came back with three shots before scoring their first goal in the 16th-minute of action. The shot was scored by Paige Goeglein off a cross, just inside the box past Stout. Two minutes after the goal, Ray put a shot on goal for the Lady Toppers. WKU posted one more shot before the Blue Raiders struck again with their second goal. In the 36th-minute Middle Tennessee's Hope Suominen scored a goal off a pair of passes inside the 18-yard box. The Lady Toppers posted one more shot on goal to close-out the first period.
In the second period the Lady Toppers allowed Middle Tennessee to open with two shots before Goad tallied a shot for the Lady Toppers. Middle Tennessee had two cornerkick opportunities in the second period. WKU held the Blue Raiders to a scoreless second half and came up short on the offensive end. WKU posted two shots on goal in the second period. The Lady Toppers had zero cornerkick opportunities in the match.
Stout battled the complete 90-minute match making four saves and finishes the regular season with a record of 7-7-2.
Up Next: The 2010 WKU Lady Topper soccer team (8-8-2, 6-5 SBC) will host the Sun Belt Conference tournament Wednesday through Saturday. WKU received a sixth-place seeding following the completion of tonight's SBC matches and will take on third seeded North Texas, Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m., at the WKU Soccer Complex.
