Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University head track and field coach Erik Jenkins announced Thursday the addition of three student-athletes to the 2010 indoor and outdoor rosters. Dante Sales, Vasity Chemweno, Tom Chouquet, and Deus Rwaheru are enrolled in school and will begin classes when the spring semester begins on Monday, January 25.
Chemweno is a junior who hails from Eldoret, Kenya and will be coming to the Hill via Rend Lake College. A four-time NJCAA all-American, she won the national title in the 1,500 meters last season. Chemweno has personal bests of 2:09.36 in the 800 meters and 4:28.23 in the 1,500 meters.
"Ms. Chemweno is an outstanding middle distance prospect who will provide us with the ability to score in several Sun Belt championship events," says Jenkins. "She has proved her ability to compete well in major meets as evidenced by her 2009 NJCAA 1,500-meter national title."
Chouquet is a true freshman from Le Plessis-Trevise, France. A two-time French junior champion in the 300 meters, he also won the French championship in the 400 meters in 2008 and was runner-up in 2009. With range from the short to long sprints, Chouquet has posted personal bests of 6.91 in the 60 meters, 10.6 in the 100 meters, and 47.82 in the 400 meters.
"Tom is another young sprinter who will enhance our sprint corps and add depth to the relays," says Jenkins. "He can compete in the short or long sprints and that versatility will be crucial in the future."
Like fellow WKU distance runners Janet Jesang and Patrick Cheptoek, junior Deus Rwaheru hails from Kampala, Uganda. Rwaheru brings a 10,000-meter personal best of 30:26 to the Hill.
"I am extremely excited about Deus," says Jenkins. "He should aid in our efforts to compete for quality distance points in the Sun Belt and at the national level.
Sales, a junior from Lakeland, Fla,'s George Jenkins High School, comes to the Hill as a transfer from Bethune Cookman University. While at BCU, he was a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference finalist and NCAA East Region qualifier in the 100 and 200 meters, and was a member of the 4x100-meter relay. Sales was also a NCAA Division I Outdoor Championship qualifier in the 100-meter dash and as a member of the BCU 4x100-meter relay. The Florida native brings personal bests of 10.34 in the 100 meters and 21.08 in the 200 meters to WKU.
"Mr. Sales is a welcomed addition to the team and our young sprint corps," says Jenkins. "As a freshman he was a conference finalist in two individual sprint events and a NCAA qualifier. I look forward to his continued development and the maturation of the group."
WKU will resume the indoor season this weekend in Lexington at the Kentucky Invitational.
