BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Western Kentucky University baseball team has returned to Nick Denes Field to prepare for its defense of the Sun Belt Conference championship and quest for a third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
Fall practice enters its second week for the Hilltoppers, who will look to build on the success of last year’s record-setting season in the upcoming 2010 campaign. The squad has begun the instructional period of practice and will move to the team portion on October 1.
“We are very excited to be back working out there,” Hilltopper head coach Chris Finwood said. “We have 16 new players, so it’s nice to get out and start working with them to see who can do what.”
The focus of practice is on offense three days a week, and the instruction shifts to defense twice a week. The practice plan will be adapted during team practices throughout the month of October, before the Hilltoppers play the Fall World Series to conclude the fall practice season. The World Series is slated to finish on Saturday, November 7, which is homecoming weekend at Western Kentucky University.
“We have a great group of kids who have good attitudes and work awfully hard,” Finwood explained. “It’s exciting to be out on the field.”
At the same time the team is working on fundamentals and refining its skills, work is also being done on a new clubhouse facility at Nick Denes Field. The clubhouse, which is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2010 season, will house the Hilltopper baseball program and will have offices for the coaches, a player locker room and a lounge, as well as an equipment room and a training room for injury rehabilitation and prevention.
A photo gallery has been created and will follow the construction of the clubhouse as it heads towards completion. Check back periodically for new updates on what is sure to be one of the finest facilities in all of college baseball.
