Berlin, Germany - Western Kentucky Univeristy senior-to-be Gavin Smellie is representing his home country of Canada this week at the 12th IAAF World Championships at Berlin Olympic Stadium.
Smellie, a native of Etobicoke, Ontario, placed third in heat nine of the first round of the 200-meter dash, clocking a time of 20.71 seconds to advance to the afternoon session's quarter-final. There, he placed eighth in heat one, clocking a time of 21.27 out of lane seven, while the heat was won by 100- and 200-meter world record holder Usain Bolt of Jamaica.
Although not advancing to the next round of the 200 meters, Smellie will take to the track again Friday as a member of Canada's 4x100-meter relay team.
"Gavin continues to perform well in major meets and we are extremely proud of him," says WKU head coach Erik Jenkins. "He has shown that he has the ability to compete with the best in the world at 200 meters. I look forward to his continued success at the World Championships in the relay."
