AUBURN, Ala. - The WKU softball team (5-2) ended the Auburn University Tiger Invitational by easily taking down Eastern Kentucky, 13-0. The Lady Toppers finished the invitational with a 2-1 record with wins over Furman and Eastern Kentucky and a loss to Auburn in eight innings.
The Lady Toppers took control of the game in the first inning scoring five runs off two hits and two Eastern Kentucky errors. After walking junior Brooke Reed, WKU scored their first run off a single by senior Terri Ellingsworth. Senior Rebecca Horesky, who also walked in the first inning, advanced to second after the single and made the score 2-0 WKU when senior Sam Cronk reached first base after a EKU error. Following Eastern Kentucky’s first error, Ellingsworth scored WKU’s third run of the inning off another EKU error and then junior Rachelle Boucher drove in the Lady Topper’s final two runs of the inning off a double to left field.
WKU extended their lead to eight in the second inning after more hot hitting. Reed was the first to reach base in the inning after hitting her first single of the day and advanced to third off a junior Lindsay Antone single. After Horesky walked for the second time of the day, Reed and Antone made it 7-0 off a Ellingsworth single. On the next play, Horesky then scored another WKU run after Cronk hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
IIn the fourth inning, WKU added five more runs. Reed started off the inning with her second walk of the day and stole second before scoring her second run of the game off a Antone single. With Antone on second, junior Ashley Contreras recorded her first RBI of the weekend posting a single. The next three WKU batters, sophomore Sara Williams, junior Rachelle Boucher and junior Kelsey McCauley, all recorded singles and Contreras, Williams and Boucher made the score 13-0.
Pitcher Ryan Rogge was nearly perfect in the game giving up only one hit and zero runs.
