Down 6-1 heading into the sixth, the Hilltoppers (14-20) loaded the bases with a Rebecca Horesky single, Shelby Smith single and a Shannon Smith fielder’s choice. Kelsey McCauley then launched a grand slam over the center field wall to cut the gap to one run. The homer was McCauley’s second of her career and first this season. Terri Ellingsworth then singled up the middle to keep the rally going before the next two batter flied and grounded out, respectively.
The Aces (17-9) tacked on three runs in the first after an Amanda Ockomon two-RBI single. Then Evansville added three more runs in the third after starting pitcher Jacki Bradley hit a three-run home run to right.
Four Hilltoppers added two hits on the day as WKU out hit Evansville 12-4. Rachelle Boucher, Horesky, She. Smith, and Sam Cronk each collected two hits each. Jennifer Kempf took the loss after allowing only four hits.
Bradley (7-7) earned the victory after hitting a three-run homer and pitching 5.1 innings while striking out two.
The Hilltoppers return home on Thursday to face Morehead State at 2 p.m. (CDT) for a doubleheader at the WKU Softball Complex.
