For the men, the duo of Terrill McCombs and Gavin Smellie went one-two in the 200-meter dash, with times of 21.66 and 21.67, respectively. Those times rank as the second and third best performances ever recorded by a WKU athlete over 200 meters. In the 400-meter dash, Romaine McKay was the top collegiate finisher, posting a time of 49.26 to place second overall. Also on the track, Derrius Brooks was the runner-up in the 55-meter dash in a time of 6.40 seconds, while Bethuel Kiplagat took second in the 800 meters with a clocking of 1:56.85.
Matt Taitt had yet another sweep in the throws for the Hilltoppers, as he was the top finisher in the weight with a throw of 57-3.50 and won the shot with a put of 55-1. Finishing second in both throwing events was Brian Soverns, who recorded a toss of 53-9 in the weight and a career-best of 54-8 in the shot put. Also in the field events, Asa Dew was the top collegiate finisher in the triple jump, where he recorded a leap of 45-11.75 to take third overall.
Kellie Morrison led the charge for the Lady Toppers, taking top honors in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.26 and placing third in the 200 meters in 24.99. Also in the sprints, Valerie Brown was runner-up in the 200-meter dash, also posting a time of 24.99 seconds, which moves her to fifth all-time in the event on the Hill. In the mile, Janet Jesang defeated all competitiors, clocking a time of 5:03.29.
In the field events for the women, Sarah Lambrecht posted the fourth-best performance in WKU hisotry in the weight throw, taking runner-up honors with a mark of 53-3. Also, Kayla Pittman took top honors in the high jump with a clearance of 5-0.
The Lady Toppers are looking for their third-straight SBC indoor championship in two weeks at the Murphy Center, while the men are coming off a third-place team finish from 2007.
