Bowling Green, Ky. The WKU softball team opened up the Topper Fall Classic by easily defeating Lindsey Wilson 11-2 in five innings. The Lady Toppers, who were nearly perfect in the field, were explosive on offense posting 15 hits and only no errors on the way to their fifth win of the fall season.
The Lady Toppers began the game hot on offense finishing the first inning with four hits including a three-run homer by senior Terri Ellingsworth to take the lead 4-0. In the second inning, the Lady Toppers made the score 7-0 after a triple by junior Rachelle Boucher and a single by senior Brooke Reed.
During the third and fourth innings, the Lady Toppers added three runs off seven hits and in the fifth inning, junior Lindsay Antone posted her first homerun of the fall season extending WKU's lead to 11. Freshman Amanda Walden also got in on the action hitting her first homerun in a WKU uniform in front of a hometown crowd. Overall for the Lady Toppers in only five innings, six WKU stars recorded two hits.
WKU's pitcher senior Jennifer Kempf was also outstanding finishing the night with four strikeouts while only allowing seven hits and giving up no walks.
Lindsey Wilson was paced by freshmen Caren Alexander who finished the night with three hits including one double.
The Lady Toppers will conlude the Topper Fall Classic tomorrow when they host Volunteer State Community College at 3 p.m. CDT and Kentucky Wesleyan at 7 p.m. The Lady Toppers will also be hosting Breast Cancer Awareness day in order to promote and support breast cancer research. The team will be wearing pink jerseys and will be accepting donations throughout the day. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and show their support for the cause and for the Lady Toppers.
