Representing his home country of Canada, the Toronto, Ontario native finished fifth in the finals of the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.09 seconds. To earn his way into the finals, Smellie recorded the fastest first round performance of the competition yesterday with a 20.81 clocking, and followed that effort with a 21.12 in round two. In the semifinal round, Smellie again recorded the fastest performance among advancing participants with a 20.83. Among all times recorded among the participants in the men's 200-meter dash, Smellie was the only athlete to record two sub-20.90 second performances, and in fact, recorded the second- and third-fastest times in all four rounds.
Smellie qualified for the 2007 Summer Universiade by placing second in the 200-meter dash at the Canadian Track and Field Championships last month in Windsor, Ontario, where he clocked a time of 20.75 seconds. The Toronto, Ontario native holds the second-fastest times ever recorded by a Hilltopper in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes, and was an NCAA Mideast Regional qualifier in five events this past season — the 100, 200, and 400 meters, as well as the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays.
