Mendez-Valdez will undergo surgery Friday to insert a screw in the foot, and he is expected to make a full recovery.
The 6-foot, 180-pound native of San Antonio appeared in 24 of 25 contests his first season on the Hill, recording 68 points, 38 assists and 16 rebounds while averaging 11.9 minutes per game. He shot 38.9 percent from three-point range and connected on 88.9 percent at the free-throw line.
“We are very disappointed for Orlando,” said Hilltopper head coach Darrin Horn. “He showed marked improvement over the course of the season and became a fixture in our rotation.”
WKU — which is 20-5 and has already clinched the Sun Belt Conference East Division regular-season title — has two contests left prior to the league tournament. The Toppers will face Middle Tennessee this evening at 7 p.m. (CST) and will play host to Florida International Saturday at 7 p.m. on Senior Night.
