Western (18-34) jumped out with three runs in the first inning, only to see Austin Peay (35-18) come back to take an 8-4 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. However, in the bottom of the inning, WKU sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven runs to open up a 11-8 lead.
The Governors made it a one-run game with a two-spot in the top of the fifth, but the Hilltoppers blew the game wide open in the bottom of the inning as they sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 13 runs. The inning was capped by a Judd Robertson three-run home run — the first of his Western career.
After APSU put three on the board in the top of the sixth, Jordan Newton hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning — his team-leading 12th of the season — to stretch the lead to 27-13. WKU added two more in the seventh, and the bullpen blanked the Governors over the final three innings to pick up the 16-run victory.
Both Robertson and Newton drove in a career-high five runs each for the Hilltoppers. Robertson also collected a career-high three hits, while Eric Scriven also added the fifth three-hit game of his Hilltopper career. As a team, WKU collected a season-high 21 hits.
Western wraps up the regular season this weekend as they host 19th-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series.
