The wins on Saturday improved Western's overall record to 6-4.
Western Kentucky 10, Austin Peay 1
Game one of the day for the Hilltoppers could have been nicknamed “The Adrienne Lathrop Show.” Although she did not pitch in the contest, she batted seventh in the lineup and slammed two homers for WKU. Her first bomb came in the first inning when she caught up to a pitch from Ashley Porter and sent it over the right-center field wall for a two-run home run. Lathrop's next at-bat turned out to be the last for Porter as Lathrop ripped into another pitch for a three-run shot to give the Hilltoppers a 10-0 lead in the top half of the fourth inning.
Floyd also contributed in Western's first game, she came away with four RBI and three hits. The way Floyd contributed was less spectacular than Lathrop's two homers, but the second baseman's three singles still helped to put a “W” in the score book for the Hilltoppers.
Western used a pair of freshmen in the circle to attain the victory. Ashton Strode got the start and went three innings, allowing one hit and no runs in the outing. Coming in to relieve Strode was Ashley Krueger, who pitched two innings, giving up two hits and the lone Lady Gov run.
Western Kentucky 8, UT-Martin 7
WKU's second game of the day was the 5 p.m. contest against UT-Martin. It was highlighted by Floyd's fourth inning grand slam over the wall in left field; she plated Kit Dunbar, who was pinch running for Sam Young, Jen Ballance, and Renita Pennington with the blast.
The Hilltoppers' first three runs came across home plate via a double by the pitcher, Lathrop, in the third inning.
WKU seemed to be cruising to their second win of the day until the Skyhawks threatened in the top of the seventh. Third baseman Emily Webb came to the plate with one out and the bases loaded and promptly disposed of the ball into the parking lot behind the left field wall, drawing the score to 8-7. Lathrop settled down and got the next two batters out to win the game.
Lathrop pitched all seven innings to earn the complete game; she allowed seven runs, five of them earned, and picked up eight strike outs along the way.
As the tournament's #1 seed, the Hilltoppers' first game will be at 1 p.m. (CST) against the winner of the #4 seed versus #5 seed match-up. The championship game will be played at 3 p.m.
