Chattanooga, Tenn. - Junior Samantha Hansen provided all of the fireworks as the Western Kentucky Softball team defeated Tennessee Tech 3-1 at the Frost Classic. Hansen picked up her first collegiate hit, a two-run homer, to give freshman Adrienne Lathrop (2-1) the victory.
Lathrop went 6.1 innings, allowing one unearned run, as the Hilltoppers improved to 2-5 on the season. Junior Allison Silver came on in relief of Lathrop in the seventh inning with two runners on base, and closed the door on the Golden Eagles for her first save of the season.
The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, when a bunt single from Marianne Novac plated Amy Goad. After tallying just two hits through the first five innings, the Hilltoppers came to life in the top of the sixth with three hits, highlighted by a two-run home run from Hansen. Western opened the sixth inning with a double from senior Kristalyn Smith, her fourth of the year, and bunt single from sophomore Shelly Floyd. After advancing to third on a groundout, Smith scored on a wild pitch from Tennessee Tech's Lori Bayless to even the score at 1-all. With the score tied, Hansen stepped up to the plate and cranked a two-run shot to deep leftfield, her first hit as a Hilltopper.
