Bowling Green - The Western Kentucky women's soccer team broke open a 2-2 halftime tie with six unanswered second half goals en route to a 9-3 victory over visiting Morehead State Sunday afternoon at the W.K.U. Soccer Complex.
Kelly Frericks (Bowling Green, Ky.) started the rampage for Western (3-1-0) with a goal off a deflection in the 51st minute. Allison Nellis (Louisville, Ky.) scored her second of three goals on the day in the 54th minute off an assist from Jocelyn Roach (Ovilla, Texas) to make the score 5-2. Crytstal Chapon (North Potomac, Md.), Kim Warren (Austin, Texas), and Jennifer Wilson (Prospect, Ky.) added three more goals to make the score 7-2.
Tracy Tenholder stopped the bleeding for Morehead St. (1-3-0) with a goal in the 85th minute to cut the deficit to 7-3. Katherine Hunt (Bowling Green, Ky.) and Lauren Wilson (Prospect, Ky.) closed out the scoring for the Lady Topper with two goals late in the second half.
Nellis opened the scoring in the first half with a goal in the seventh minute of the game off a pass from Chapon. Morehead St. countered with two goals by Heidi Dickten and Christina Moore to take a brief 2-1 lead, but Nellis countered with her second goal of the day in the game's 43rd minute to tie the score at halftime.
For the game, the Lady Toppers outshot Morehead State 44-8 including a 22-5 advantage in shots on goal. Western Goalie Amy Uhlman (Louisville, Ky.) (3-1-0) picked up her third consecutive win in goal.
Western continues its season with a road match against Oklahoma St. on Thursday. Match time is set for 7 p.m. (CDT).
