The game got off to a slow start as neither team could find much of a rhytm in the muddy field conditions caused by a driving rain. Western (4-3-0) broke a scoreless tie when Lauren Wilson (Fr., Prospect, Ky.) scored her second goal of the season off a pass from teammate Crystal Chapon (So., North Potomac, Md.). Allison Nellis (So., Louisville, Ky.) closed out the first-half scoring with her fifth goal of the season in the 43rd minute. Kim Warren (Fr., Austin Texas) picked up her third assist of the season on the play. Western led 2-0 at the break despite being outshot 6-5 by Oral Roberts (2-4-0).
Oral Robert's Jodi Kirkhuff cut Western's lead in half when she scored off a Martha Owens pass in the game's 52nd minute. However, the Lady Topper defense shut down a late scoring rally by the Eagles to remain undefeated at home on the season. For the game, Oral Roberts outshot Western 13-8. The Lady Toppers were whistled for 21 fouls, while the Eagles picked up 14. Melissa Bailey (Fr.) picked up her first career victory in goal for Western. She recorded five saves on the night including two crucial saves in the final 10 minutes of the second half that sealed the victory.
Western's next game is against Lipscomb Univesity Sunday afternoon at the WKU Soccer Complex. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. (CDT).
