Bowling Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky Women's soccer team scored three goals in a span of five minutes in the second half to defeat visiting Lipscomb University 4-0 at the WKU Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon. The Lady Toppers (5-3-0) have now won two consecutive games and are a perfect 4-0 at home.
"This was a really good weekend for us," head coach Jason Neidell said afterwards. "It was good to get back on the field. We take pride in playing at home."
Western dominated the first half of play but only scored once despite outshooting Lipscomb 18-1. Erica Baker (So., Lisle, Ill.) gave Western a 1-0 halftime lead when she headed a pass from Lauren Wilson (Fr., Prospect, Ky.) into the net for her second goal of the season in the 32nd minute.
The Lady Toppers pulled away in the second half with a three-goal barrage. Kim Warren (Fr., Austin, Texas) started the rally, scoring her fourth goal of the season off a feed from Andrea Doogs (So., Elizabethtown, Ky.) in the 64th minute to make the score 2-0. Allison Nellis (So, Louisville, Ky.) added her team leading sixth goal of the year two minutes later to give the Lady Toppers a 3-0 advantage. Betsy Duncan (West Des Moines, Iowa) added her first goal of the season in the 69th minute to close out the scoring. Crystal Chapon (So., North Potomac, Md.) assisted on the score.
For the game, the Lady Toppers outshot the Lady Bison 41-2. Western's goalkeeping duo of Melissa Bailey (Jr., Bowling Green, Ky.) and Becky Kasper (Fr., Elburn, Ill.) combined for the shutout. Bailey (2-0-0) picked up her second consecutive victory in goal. She saved the only shot that came her way.
Western opens Sun Belt Conference play Monday, September 30th against Florida International in Miami, Fla. Match time is set for 1:00 p.m. (CDT).
