Des Moines, Iowa - The Western Kentucky women's soccer team lost its second consecutive game Saturday night as the Lady Toppers fell to Drake, 5-1. The Bulldogs were led by Andrea Schmitz's three goal performance.
Drake's (2-2-1) Andrea Craig started the scoring with a goal in the 5th minute of regulation to stake the Bulldogs to a 1-0 advantage. Schmitz then followed with two consecutive goals in both the 17th and 31st minutes of the game to give Drake a 3-0 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs outshot Western (3-3) 10-7 in the first half.
The Lady Toppers mounted a rally early in the second half when Allsion Nellis (So., Louisville, Ky.) scored her fourth goal of the season three minutes into the second half to cut the lead to 3-1. Kim Warren (Fr., Austin, Texas) picked up her second assist of the season on the play. The Lady Toppers would get no closer as Schmitz added her third goal of the contest in the 64th minute. Carrie Knight added another goal in the 86th minute to close out the scoring for the Bulldogs. Western outshot Drake 9-4 in the second half, 16-14 for the game.
Bulldog goalie Kate Stack (2-2-1) saved nine shots on the night to pick up the victory in goal. Lady Topper goalie Amy Uhlman (So., Louisville, Ky.) (3-3-0) played the entire game in goal and managed two saves on the night.
Western's next game is scheduled for Friday, September 20 in Bowling Green. The Lady Toppers will take on Oral Roberts at the W.K.U. Soccer Complex. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. (CDT).
