Martin, Tenn. - The Western Kentucky Lady Topper soccer team defeated Tennessee Martin 1-0 in its final pre-season exhibtion match Saturday afternoon.
Jocelyn Roach's (So., Ovilla, Tex.) goal in the 55th minute of the second half ended a scoreless tie between the two schools. Roach caught a cross from Crystal Chapon (So., North Potomac, Md.) on the right side of the goal and fired from six yards out for the game's only score.
The match was an intense defensive battle with few shots being taken and most of the action occuring in midfield. UT-Martin outshot Western 12-9, but failed to score against a stingy Lady Topper defense.
Western ends the preseason with a 1-0-1 record. The Lady Toppers tied Tennessee Tech 2-2 Friday night in Bowling Green.
Western opens its regular season Friday in Birmingham, Ala. against Samford, who is hosting a three-team round-robin tournament. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CDT). Western will then take on Birmingham Southern Sunday, September 1 at 2 p.m.
